Fast Facts
Melasma causes dark, discolored patches on your skin. It’s also called chloasma, or the “mask of pregnancy,” when it occurs in pregnant women. Men can get this condition too.
Melasma can appear on the cheeks, forehead, bridge of the nose, around the mouth and chin. It isn’t totally clear what causes melasma, but darker-skinned individuals are more at risk than those with fair skin.
Causes may include estrogen and progesterone sensitivity; stress and thyroid disease; and sun exposure to ultraviolet rays that affect the cells controlling pigment (melanocytes).
Real life patient stories
“After I had my first child, the “mask of pregnancy” didn’t resolve on its own. I met with Dr. Vakil who prescribed a multi-step regimen that involved Halo Pro treatments, chemical peels and an at-home skin care routine which really helped to minimize almost all of my melasma. I feel so much more confident leaving the house without concealer!”
