It goes without saying that, here in the Pacific Northwest, we see far more grey, cloudy days than those of bright sunshine. While the sun seemingly cannot, UV radiation is able to break through and make its way through the clouds. Thus, sun damage is just as much a threat on cloudy days as it is on sunny days. No matter the weather, it is important to take steps to protect your skin from the sun’s damaging ultraviolet rays.
How Does UV Radiation Damage the Skin?
UV damage can wreak havoc on our skin. It slows cell renewal, creates unhealthy cells, and causes premature aging. Fine lines, wrinkles, sun spots, and hyperpigmentation are all accelerated because of sun exposure. Most importantly, however, overexposure to the sun’s dangerous UV rays puts one at higher risk for developing skin cancer.
Take Steps to Protect Your Skin from Sun Damage
There are easy ways to protect yourself from UV damage, including:
- Stay out of direct sunlight when it is at its strongest (between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.)
- Wear long-sleeved shirts and pants when possible
- Protect your face, eyes, and hair with a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses
- Get Vitamin D through a healthy diet and/or vitamin supplements
