Collagen is the holy grail for youthful-looking skin. At RejuvenationMD, many of our non-surgical treatments are focused on initiating the stimulation of new collagen, fibrin and elastin through a range of treatment modalities. Ultrasound energy is another way we can stimulate new collagen development. But until recently, Ultherapy was one of the only viable ultrasound technologies available in aesthetics FDA-cleared to treat lax skin on the face, neck and chest. However, Ultherapy treatments can have a litany of side effects. Procedures can be very painful, treatment times are long, and there are risks of burning, muscle weakness, chronic pain from nerve damage, scarring and more.

Consequently, she was not interested in introducing Ultherapy and its associated risks to the practice. However, when Sofwave™, an advanced noninvasive ultrasound technology, became FDA-cleared, she and her team began diving into the research. Sofwave works at an ideal depth for collagen remodeling and stimulation. The ultrasound beams do not go into danger zones where they could potentially damage muscles, nerves, and the good fat that we want in our faces.
Great Skin Goes Beyond the Surface
Sofwave delivers heat 1.5mm into the mid-dermis layer of skin. The dermis layer sits right below the epidermis and makes up the vast majority of our skin’s thickness. By working at this precise depth and temperature, Sofwave treatments initiate the production of new collagen, elastin, and fibrin.
While it generally takes three to four months for the body to develop new collagen tissue, patients often swear they see noticeable results in about a week after their Sofwave skin tightening treatment. This is because collagen’s extracellular matrix improves the skin’s strength and elasticity. Not only does it remodel the dermis layer to lift and tighten, it also generates new volume to visibly reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in the epidermis layer of the skin, which sits right above the dermis.
What Can Sofwave Treat?
In one to two treatments, Sofwave will lift the brow, tighten and lift the neck, snatch and define the jawline, and reduce (or eliminate) the appearance of a double chin. It’s excellent for treating sagging skin, and generally tightening, lifting, and defining the following areas:

Sofwave uses seven parallel beams of ultrasound technology to stimulate collagen production to treat loose skin. Treatment quickly and effectively targets every nook and cranny of the dermis layer. Depending on the area we’re treating, a procedure can take anywhere from 15 minutes to one hour.
Most patients need one to two corrective treatments and then one treatment per year to maintain the results. Because treatment generates new collagen, patients may also notice improvement in the tone and texture of their skin.
Who Is a Candidate for Sofwave?
Good candidates for Sofwave have mild to moderate loose skin. The beauty of this treatment is that it’s safe for all skin types and there’s generally no pre or post care required. However, our providers will want you to come to your appointment well hydrated for optimal results. We’ll also want to know if you get cold sores so we can prescribe antiviral medication before treatment as heat can sometimes cause an outbreak.
Because Sofwave’s ultrasound energy uses heat to stimulate collagen remodeling, our providers will also want to know if you have melasma. Heat can exacerbate melasma, but there are different settings we can use to help protect the skin.
